Book Club Discussion Questions

Sofia’s journey
1)
Was there a moment in the story when you wished you could offer advice to Sofia? When and what would you have said?
2) Did you ever anticipate that Esteban might “save” Sofia by helping her find a job, offering to marry, or another solution? What do you think would’ve been Sofia’s response?
3) How did you feel about the ending? What do you think happens between Sofia and Esteban after the story ends?

Equal pay
4)
In 2024, women working full-time earned $0.84 for every $1 paid to men. The gap is wider for women of color: Black women earned $0.64, and Latinas earned $0.58* What factors do you think contribute to these wage disparities? In Sofia’s situation, what options or strategies might be available to address this systemic issue?

Job hunting
5)
In the U.S., men tend to apply for jobs when they meet about 60% of the listed criteria, while women often wait until they meet 100%* Have you ever made a bold professional or entrepreneurial decision, or advocated for yourself during a job search? What was that experience like, and what came from it?

Migrant remittances
6)
Every year, billions of dollars are sent in the form of migrant remittances to families in need in Latin American countries. How do you think immigrants navigate decisions around financially supporting family members abroad? How did you view Sofia’s choices regarding her Sunset salary?

Cultural identity
7)
How do immigrants balance honoring their cultural heritage and family traditions while building a life in a new country? If this resonates with you personally, are there ways you maintain that connection? What does that look like?
